Virtual Discworld Fun Day

Welcome To Ankh-Morpork

Virtual Discworld Fun Day - 18 June 2022

The Australian Discworld Convention is proud to announce the Virtual Discworld Fun Day, planned for Saturday, June 18th, 2022.

What is Virtual Discworld Fun Day?

The Virtual Discworld Fun Day is a live event, held using Zoom, full of events and activities similar to those you may experience at an in-person Discworld Convention. This event is free to anyone to attend and watch, and there's some things you can participate in too!

Why are we holding this? Well, it's been a tough few years for everybody, and with the unfortunate cancellation of Nullus Anxietas 7a, we won't be getting together in person for a convention any time soon. The 2021 virtual events of The Lost Con and Virtual Hogswatch were a success, so the Virtual Discworld Fun Day is another chance for us to keep the spirit of the Australian Discworld Convention alive until we hold another in-person convention.

What's on the programme?

Current planned activities include:

  • The Discworld Quiz
  • Book Discussions
    • Pratchat will be joining us to discuss "The Carpet People", comparing the 1971 and 1992 versions.
    • We'll also dive deep into "Sourcery", with an associated crafting activity for you to do!
    • So refresh yourselves by (re-)reading these books!
  • Crafting activities
    • Get out that pretty paper for some Discworld origami - we'll show you how to make it!
    • And use paper and coloured pencils/pens for an activity related to the "Sourcery" book discussion
  • Maskerade - our regular costume/prop/accessory competition
    • Enter your new or existing costume, prop, or accessory to win prizes and the accolade of your friends!
    • Fill in this form to participate - entries close June 4th, 2022
  • A Surprising Escape - a virtual escape room
    • Solve some puzzles in a Discworld themed escape room with your friends. This room is specifically designed for beginners and there's no way you can fail!
    • Book a private session using this form and we'll slot you in for a session during June.
    • ... or watch our intrepid team of puzzle-solvers play through the room on the day itself (with spoilers, of course!)
  • Revisit your favourite scenes from the Discworld series - performed by a full live cast!
  • And finish out the night by playing the Jackbox party games with everyone!
  • Plus... a special announcement.

A more detailed timetable will be revealed closer to June 18. Given that this is a live event, times and details of the activities are subject to change

How do I attend and watch? How can I take part in activities?

We'll be using Zoom to run the Virtual Discworld Fun Day. You will need an internet connected device with reasonable bandwidth so you can watch video streams. We advise downloading the Zoom Meetings Client/App for your computer, tablet or phone in advance.

The link to join the Zoom call will be published here on June 17, and will also be emailed out via our newsletter and posted in the Facebook event. Please also indicate on that event if you're planning to attend!

For most events, you will not need (or be allowed) to have your video camera or microphone switched on, but you can type messages in the Zoom chat to ask the panelists questions or just chat amongst yourselves. Remember to keep it family friendly!

For crafting events, feel free to post pictures of what you've created in the Zoom chat or in the Facebook event.

To participate in the Quiz or the Jackbox games, we suggest that you use a second device (like your phone) to play, while watching the Zoom call on a different device (computer, TV, etc). You do not need to install any special apps to play in the Quiz or Jackbox games, you just need a mobile browser app like Chrome, Firefox or Safari.

Rules for participants:

  • We politely ask that you do not record the Virtual Discworld Fun Day, as there are copyright issues with some events.
  • We plan to record some events and post them to our YouTube channel at a later date.
  • For some events we will allow members to talk and ask questions directly. Please remember that this is a family friendly event, so take care in your choice of words.
  • Be most excellent to each other.

  • Virtual Discworld Fun Day is a virtual event, presented live. Whilst we will do our best to ensure good quality audio and video, we cannot guarantee the quality of internet connections.
  • We will do our best to adhere to the published schedule of events, but this may be subject to "things that happen on the day".
